Can a movie make people sad o r suicidal?

It seems there is a growing number of people are disturbed by the hit movie Avatar. “”The hubbub began with this story on CNN.com, “Audiences experience ‘Avatar’ blues,” about how some avid Avatar fans are so enthralled by the movie’s lush landscapes of Pandora, the imaginary world where the movie takes place, and the nature-loving ethos of the Na’vi race, that their own lives pale in comparison. Go off the deep end  — i.e. suicidal thoughts — and this is a disturbing phenomenon, to be sure.” (Psych. Today)

A utopia where people live in harmony and peace with the world has been a dream of many for millenia. Unfortuantely the reality of the world is far from this. Human nature, not the nature we ‘think’ we have, but the real human nature as seen in the chaos of the world, seems set against our quest for peace and happiness. So many people want to escape into a fantasy world – in film, but also through the use of other escape/coping mechanisms such as drugs and alcohol. Even junk food is an escape of sorts, a quick fix to make us feel better. But as we see, it always has a heavy cost.

The sad truth is the world is not going to change. The good news is that it is that part of you that gets sad and depressed at life that is causing ALL your problems. You, your ego, are thyour own worst enemy. This is great news because it gives us the power to make the changes to improve our world.  The world is the way it is, because you are the way you are.

If you can remember this, every time you get sad or depressed (or stressed and anxious) – you will wake up to the fact that you do not have to fall into the trap of negative emotions. You do not have to escape into drugs, alcohol, comfort foods or movies like Avatar – they only end up making you worse in the long term.

Armed with this new knowledge, you can step up and make positive choices. In the moment, you can do a number of things to help let go of those emotions. Exercise, or even going out into the woods for a walk, yoga, meditation, prayer, listening to relaxing music or even reading the Bible or some other inspirational book – can work wonders for you.

They say “You can’t have your cake and eat it too’ but I say ’stay awake and have your cake’ meaning you can find joy in the moment no matter what just be waking up.  The biggest mistake you can make is to think your awake – or “Let the dead bury the dead” someone once said.  Same thing – you get the point.
